Shaken or stirred?

We all know that James Bond loves his martinis shaken and not stirred, but why specify? What's the difference anyway?

Generally speaking, most cocktails that are spirit forward are stirred. Spirit forward meaning cocktails that don't rely on mixers and are meant to have the spirits taste really come through.

Cocktails that mask the flavor of a spirit slighlty are generally shaken. Shaking the cocktail also allows the ice to melt more into the drink, which can help mask a spirits flavor also. In some cases, the extra ice melting helps bring out some flavors in a spirit like in a whiskey.

For this cocktail though we like to stir it, but you're more than welcome to shake it if that's how you prefer it.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 4 oz Baileys Irish Cream
  • 4 oz Chocolate Liqueur
  • 8 oz Coconut vodka or rum
  • 3 tbsp chocolate syrup or ganache

Instructions

  • Presentation: This step is optional but it makes the cocktail look that much more impressive and delicious. Take your chocolate syrup and drizzle it around the sides of your glass. You can also then add that syrup to a small plate and dip the rim of your glass into it to coat the rim and give you that much more of that chocolatey punch.

  • Mix: Combine Baileys, chocolate liqueur, and the coconut vodka or rum in a cocktail shaker filled with about a cup of Ice. Stir until chilled through. You should see the condensation forming around the outside edge of the shaker..

  • Strain: Place a strainer on the shaker and strain your drink into the prepared glasses. If you want to garnish the top at this point, chocolate shavings are the perfect topping.
